I understand that the police are going to start checking driver's eyesight if they pull you over for something under "Cassie's Law". A failure to read a license plate from 20m may result in a loss of license and a fine of upto £1000.


Since I'm a worrier I was at the window reading the license plates of my neighbour's cars across the street. (all read ok).

Thank you all for your messages. I did try and enroll onto an Oxford Uni trial to try and improve damaged peripheral vision in stroke patients but its not likely to proceed for another 12 mths at least . The annoying thing thing is the advice from the DVLA is to practice using a scanning technique looking side to side. I do that anyway, being on the road for some 55 years without any serious crashes means I must have some survival instinct. I will have to get retested to make sure there is no worsening of my vision in 12 mths and then may have to (will) be required to do a driving assessment. If all goes well then I can return to the road. My straight ahead vision is fine. I can read a number plate at 30 mtrs +. I do understand the need for the DVLA to verify that my sight does not deteriorate in any way, but it could be done another way , even an eye test every month, (would be willing to pay) but it is what it is. Next project is to sort out an electric bike kit, then during the winter I might strip the Cub down with a view of trying to slow down the oil leaks. At the moment its working as a dead loss system!

Electric as in bicycle? Converting a manual bike to electric assist would be a nice project but it will probably look like DIY job when you're finished. The advantage is you get to pick the style, size and more importantly weight of your base machine of course.

I love my electric Cube, but it is a real chonker of a unit. It's very stable on day trips as a consequence but the tech has moved on a lot in the last few years so there are some much more stealthy options now. If my ancient Raleigh (for short hops into town or the supermarket) fails on me I will defo look to replace it with a basic lightweight electric model.

Good luck either way. And with curing the Cub's oil leaks. And the health stuff...

Thanks for the advice and info Trev. I was a strong cyclist and Christine had an electric bike pre Covid because of her arthritis With a Bosch powered crank motor, but it is heavy and 4 inch longer than a standard bike. I had to modify the m/home bike rack to take the length and weight so I do need a lightish one as I could end up ripping the back of the van off! There is 6 bikes in the garage including Chris's. Whatever I end up with will be hybrid style. This is one kit I am looking at https://boostbike.uk/completeboostkit. Another is based in Winchester and on that all cables are made to length however the kit costs over a grand. One problem I have is no one supports 27 inch wheels anymore. I could build the motor into a wheel myself -I used to build wheels back in the day and did get great satisfaction from doing it, decisions decisions decisions.
