Question Exhaust

When i bought my bike i got told that it was standard, however when i was out yesterday with a couple of mates they dont think the exhaust is a standard one. Is there any way of telling?

The only markings on the exhaust are "carbon can company"

If it is not standard will this affect my insurance?

no thats not standard. std is more like a giant potatoe cannon which is why most people get rid of them. as for insurance that is down to the company your with. slip on cans dont add any power and so most are fine with it but will only replace it with a standard one if you have an accident. hth scott

not standard unless they changed the exhaust hanger/bracket between k5 (which mine is) and k6. The standard unit has a thin metal bracket welded to the can, and a hole for the bolt to line up with the pillion footpeg.

Your exhaust has a proper hanger type mounting with a rubber sleeve/cuff - to my knowledge they aren't standard features. And carbon can company - the suzuki item has "suzkui tested noise rating '##" or something along those lines, stamped into the metal...

at a glance it looks ok but the scribing on the end ( the close up photo) worries me.

Yes it potentially could invalidate an insurance claim and so worth finding out for sure. My standard can has writing on the main body of the can itself on the inside facing the Tyre ( right at the end by the exit point)
All others with standard systems look identicle to mine so i wonder if someone has been clever and made it look the same but make it aftermarket to do away with the Cat converter.
suzuki dealer for 100% peace of mind.. they can tell you in a heartbeat

They do a little bit, but not much.

Best thing to do is to ring Carbon Can Company themselves and ask them what they rate the BHP gain as.

I might not be correct as it depends on the insurance comany, just declare it as non performance gain and you should be OK if its just an end can as opposed to a full system. Personally I think you'll be OK if you declare it as such. Mostly end cans are for looks and noise over pure performance gains IMHO.

My insurance company are'nt fussed as long as it doesnt increase the power by 3% of the bikes total BHP.

No, its a slip on exhaust not a full system so there is no performance increase. No need to worry.

Thanks for the replys guys.

So should i let the insurance company know that i have a slip on with no power gain or do they not need to know?

What i don't want to happen is have a fall and then them not pay out because i didnt declare something, or am i being stupid?

As long as the can is marked with a BAE (or something like that - think in lines of the old kite mark) and does not say Not For Road Use on it then it should be ok. Personally I would let your insurance company know about it to be on the safe side. When I bought my bike it had and still has an ART can which does not have a baffle in it. It has the BAE thingy markings but would not pass the MOT without a DB Killer in. My insurance co wasn't bothered as it did not according to them increase the performance.

Let them no, any modification or add on should be disclosed to your insurance company as they can void your insurance when making a claim even if the mod/addition is not relevant to the claim (or a contributing factor to an accident).

In many cases disclosed mods or additions don't cost you anymore!
