Afternoon all, i was on my way home yesterday from the ace cafe in london, (never been there before but really good day) and suddenly on the fast lane on the M3 my dash lights, rev counter headlights (everything electrical) went dead!, so i pulled over and this overwelming rotten egg small hit me! which i thought was really weird but i instantly thought oh **** smells like a bad battery, so i lifted the seat up and the battery was leaking acid and had swelled massively in size. aparrently the regulater may have gone at some stage and had been over charging the battery as the battery is only 2 months old and i can remember when i first installed it with the engine on about 2,000 rpm and the lights on it was charging at 16.5 on the volt meter which i thought was normal, but im guessing not....
How can i tell if it is the regulater or somthing else? would there be any noticeable differences by looking at the regulater to show this?? like colour difference?? thanks for any replys in advance Ash. |

Defo Reg/rec IMO.
Think it should be charging at around 13.2. Hope the acid hasn't done much damage. ![]() |

nope not too much as SOON as i get her home, i got some water/ bi-carbinate soda solution and gave it a wash down in that area. i replaces the reg last night but the old one didnt have any signs of "damage" or "meltedness" lol, burt a lot of sort off white powder over the cables from it, which wiped off but i dont really know!?

The reg recs can be knackered without visible damage.
Check all the wiring for chaffing, melting and corroded connectors.

You get locally high currents in bad connections which can do all sorts of wierd stuff. Replace the connector with some crimp-ons and solder them too.

My whole bikes wired with crimp on spade connectors
![]() Crimp them, then put a blob of solder into where it's crimped and it'll last for years.
