Default Brake Con

So I've just paid a fortune to have all the brake pads replaced in order to get the bike through its MOT, which it failed on thin rear brake pads. It got a warning on the rear disk being scorched and the front brake pads being worn. So I got the garage to fit new pads all round, and said I'd save up for the disk.
2 weeks later I pop in and ask for a quote for a new disk with fitting, they say £90 for parts and hour labour at £50. However they also said as its a new disk I'll need new pads, irrespective of the fact that the pad is less than a month old. So the question I'm asking is: is it true that I'll need a new rear brake pad?

Also I won't be paying £90, I can get one off fleaBay for £40!

Also how important are dust seals on the front brakes? They took them off when I had the front pads replaced but didn't have any in stock to replace them and now saying hour and a half labour to fit them as it'll need a complete calliper rebuild!!??

I'm trying to save money here, especially as the garage just fitted a new clutch plate to fix a problem and then about 300 miles later I found that I needed a new clutch cable when the problem was still there. So probably a wrong diagnosis on their part in the first place(?).

Thanks

brand new disc needs brand new pads. Had the same when i had to put new pads on one of mine a couple of years back...few weeks later the discs knackered so had to buy both discs and pads(again)....grrrr

However I did keep the first set of pads as they had about 50 miles on em, so when my other SV needed new pads i just stuck em on that

Tbh they're not gonna know if you don't change the pads. provided you've got different discs on for the MOT you'll be cool.

get another disc, fit it yourself (£50 to fit a disc is daylight robbery imo) and bed the pads to it. Some will argue that this isn't the proper way to do it, but its worked for me so far.

I can't comment on the caliper rebuild as I've never had it done. Just buy some calipers off ebay. Cheaper than paying 1.5 hours labour + parts.

mmm caliper rebuild....YC showed me what he wanted me to do with mine and left em in the kitchen for me to scratch my head over. I cleaned em up over night, and he returned with a tub of red rubber grease and said, rub that in there, you know how you took em apart now put em back together....if I can do it, so can anyone...cheaper than paying for the priviledge

mike get a haynes manual, order the rebuild kit from wemoto and a tub of red grease and you'll do it yourself then wonder why you were willing to pay someone in the first place-as for the rear pads i'd run the newish ones in there , go to a different mot place if you think there trying to bump you mate

Mike,
So long as have a paddock stand to get the rear wheel out, changing the disc is easy. 5 disc bolts that's it. Husky's advice about getting a Haynes manual is spot on.

If you're buying a new disc, don't forget to by some brake cleaner along with the red rubber grease. You'll need the cleaner to degrease the disc, otherwise it'll not work too well and contaminate the pads.

You can use the brake cleaner to clean the caliper & pistons before fitting the new dust seals. You can get it at most car accessory shops. It's also get some thread lock at the same time, you'll need a little bit when refitting the disc bolts.

But a word of caution don't service the caliper unless you're happy doing your own maintenance, as you want your brakes to work!

But a dust seal isn't critical. Got any mates who could help out?

Did they use a bit of KY with that?

Dust seals not really necessary, but a good idea. If not using them make sure recess is packed with grease to act as a dust seal, you need to clean and rebuild calipers quite often with this method.

As for pads/disc.... be right it's only the rear. The "scorching" will go away after a while

I've just been rebuilding an old Diversion 600. I bought an old rear caliper from an autojumble for a fiver. The pads in the caliper where only about half worn, so I cleaned them with sand paper and refitted them.
I fitted them last friday and it sailed through its mot saturday. The back brake was realy good as well.
