Default Racing for dummies

This is going to make me sound pretty stupid but never mind, most of what I say does..

I have some queries about race bikes that I don't understand cos I'm new to this

What's supersport, superbike and superstock?

I'm guessing that supersports are 600's, superbikes are 1000's and superstocks also look like 1000's but then what's the difference between superstock and superbike's?

125's and 250's are 2 strokes, are these based on road bikes or custom built?

What kind of mod's are permitted within the regulations in the different classes?

Obv. Moto GP bikes are specially built for the series, but are any parts common to road bikes or other teams?

With world superbikes and british superbikes are these the same? And then are they the same as bikes used on road races like the NW200?

Sorry a lot of questions but as ever the .org has all the wisdom one could wish for

Superstocks is run on a budget on a stock bike as far as I am aware. Only things that can be upgraded is the exhaust and suspension, though not sure totallly. Whereas Superbikes, has a lot more freedom.

This doesn't get round to us telling you the truth to Keithd either

From my understanding:

Supersport: 600cc with limited tuning allowed
Superbike: 1000cc (or 1200cc twins) with a LOT of tuning and trick bits allowed
Superstock: 1000cc (or 1200cc twins) with very limited tuning allowed (Road tyres)

They are custom built bikes

Depends on the class, can be as limited as a race exhaust and air filter, or as unlimited as you want

I'd doubt it (Outside of all Honda teams having the same bits etc. and not even then with the way HRC works ) I doubt any "MotoGP" parts have ever even been near a road bike

WSB and BSB have different rules, but are very similar bikes, road bikes built up to be race bikes, rather than custome built race bikes (That's the idea anyway) As far as I know BSB spec bikes can run in Road Races (IOM TT).

That's the way I understand everything, could be wrong of course

As far as I know BSB spec bikes can run in Road Races (IOM TT).

As above, but NW, TT, etc......... the bikes have quite alot more heavy duty fairing brackets and fitments etc. To ride a superbike prepped machine in one of these races, it'd probably rattle itself into oblivion before it had completed a race.

Just so you're aware, don't think your leathers, lid, boots, etc are all the same as these guys race with. Bought my last race leathers (MJK's) from GLF Accessories. Was told than when they made some for one of the front runners, he tried them on and was less than happy at the length of the zip on the cuff.......... added too much extra weight!

I guessed these would be pretty different, but that sounds a bit pedantic doesn't it?!
