Default Engine ... yes an engine

Hi,

Looks like my precious bike needs a new engine . Anyone know of one going right now?

Bike's a curvy 2001 SK1 - carbed. It's not looking cheap, but I'm kinda attached to this bike ... even if it may end up being a bit like Trigger's broom. Looking at 20k or less really.

Got the guys at the shop to have a look, but the best offer they can find is £550 for one with 14k miles on the clock. Anyone think that this is a good/bad offer assuming that it's all working and running fine? I've got to get back to him tomorrow either way.

thanks guys,

Adrian

ebay says this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/suzuki-sv-650-...item1c0dbb91eb

a few more miles but a lot less money

EDIT: actually there's a few on there. Just search "SV engine".

Hi,

Thanks. I saw that on there. Didn't like the "the engine runs but had developed a few rattles prior to it being removed from the bike" bit ... that's what mine did just before it stopped entirely .

what was the fault with yours?

SV engines are known to be a bit tappy. Quite often it's just the cam chain.

The big fault was the squishy bit that goes between the seat and the handlebars forgot to put oil in. The engine rattled for a bit, rattled even more for a bit, then stopped.

Now it's just siezed up and the garage reckons the best option is to just replace it ... well actually, I think they'd probably suggest I get rid, but I can't bear to do it.

Ebay's certainly an option if I can find something on there, but time may well be as much of an issue as anything.

I picked up a 16k mile engine (minus LHS engine casing+stator, which I just transplanted from my old engine) for £400 from a breakers that's known for being a bit pricey. Expect to pay £300-£500 for one, depending on age, mileage, condition etc., but that £550 is way over what you can pick one up for.

I did the same recently.

But instead of a new engine I’ve had my crank reground, £130 (included a hone on the barrels) and then I need a gasket set, £120.70 from Wemoto, budget £20 for oil and £10 fir a filter and that comes in at £300 with a bit of contingency.

All I need to do now is find the energy to rebuild it...

Thanks a lot guys. It looks like the guys at the garage have found one for £450. Probably a bit over-the-top, but it came out of an MOT'd bike that'd only done 4,500 miles.

Kinda wish I had the space to go fitting the thing myself. Would be a nice project.
