Default Cyclist student at my uni killed by lorry yesterday

An email was sent out today, informing us that one of the medics in our year had been killed yesterday morning when his bicycle collided with a lorry.

I didn't know the fella personally, as our year alone has almost 400people, but I have played footy with him several times and give him the heads up when I see him.

For those who know London Bridge area, this happened at the junction of Snowsfield and Weston Street. I park my bike in an underground parking lot nearby, and use this junction virtually everytime I take my bike out. The roads are quite narrow here, and the views are obstructed by the surrounding buildings. Also the white markings on the road are not the greatest.

I virtually come to a stop when I'm at this junction, even if I have right of way. Why we don't have enough 'STOP' signs around here I really don't know. Perhaps the council might be ar*sed to sort the paint out or put up a stop sign. I don't know the exact cause of the accident, but that junction was always a disaster waiting to happen!

RIP.

I know those roads quite well from visiting a rellie in Guys hossie.Very dangerous for cyclists.Loads of potholes, narrow and congested with heavy lorries in and out of those big building sites.

Just found an article regarding this here, http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standa...ipper-truck.do

"A medical student was crushed to death in a collision with a tipper truck near London Bridge.

Witnesses said the victim, who was in his early twenties, was a fourth-year medical student at King's College and was on his way to Guy's Hospital when the accident happened shortly before 10am yesterday.

The man was riding across the junction of Weston Street and Snowsfields when he was hit by the lorry.

His death came on the day that Boris Johnson unveiled his Cycle Safety Action Plan, in which the Mayor pledged to reduce the number of serious cycling accidents, particularly those involving heavy goods vehicles.

Witnesses said the cyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was killed instantly when he was hit by the lorry.

Paul Nicholas, landlord of the nearby Rose pub, said: "It was such a horrible thing The lorry continued down the street but then stopped. It's possible the driver never even saw the cyclist."

Scotland Yard said the man was pronounced dead at the scene."

Presumptions are pointless.

I know that being objective isn't exactly fashionable, but without more information it's pointless to speculate on whose fault it was. We simply don't know the details of what happened.

So let's just accept that it's a crap time for the friends and family of the deceased and refrain from pointing fingers without clear justification.
