Default Pins and needles in right hand / fingers

Hey all

Pretty wierd problem going on here, for some reason after about 10-15 mins of riding my right hand starts to suffer quite badly from pins and needles. It feels like its in the tips of my fingers and on the back of my hand, and my wrist aches slightly. Ive been riding the SV for a couple of months and have only just started having this problem. I havent changed any of my gear, any of my setup on the bike, or anything like that.

With the above said, I managed a three hour ride on friday and after about an hour the pain / tingling seemed to go away, it just makes my half hour commute more painful than it has to be.

Has anyone experienced this before?

Cheers guys

Are you gripping the handlebars too tightly? When I was out on the CG for three hours last week (private land) I found I got pins and needles badly in the tips of my middle fingers as the vibrations affected me. Relax more!

To much weight on your wrist... In some case the vibrations and prolonged position can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome

This is a common problem, one i had also.
These are the things i tried before committing to a handelbar conversion.
Adjusted the controls so hands were in different positions,
Changed grips to softer ones,
Tried riding more over the tank with forearms more parallel to the road,
Gripping tank with knees when braking as to take some of the weight of my wrists.
These things worked a little but im 6'1" so not best suited to clip ons on the sv, handlebar conversion made a huge difference, dont get that problem any more, just neck, left shoulder ache after lengthy rides without a stop.
The sports bikes i have sat on / rode have seemed way too small for me so would need something bigger next.

Hope this helps.

Phil

I get it sometimes too after riding in the same position for an extended period. I usually get it when I've done my glove cuffs up too tight.

Try and make sure your circulation isn't affected by the clothes you're wearing and also vary your engine speed by riding in different gears. There's a certain point in my bike's rev range that makes pins and needles come on almost instantly, so I just change gear or change speed and it goes away again.

Maybe try some ape hangers

Had my first experiance with this on Saturday, it came after a 3 hour ride, while getting a move on shall we say. Ive just put it down to vibrations and the postition of my wrist at certain throttle positions.

Thanks for the suggestions, will give the cuff idea a go! Dont really wanna change the bars or do anything drastic because ive had the bike for 2 months, and up until a week or 2 ago ive been fine! Also the wierdest thing i found was that it went away on my long ride :S but that could have been as Carty said due to the speed changing quite frequently... (M4 + A404M roadworks, YAY!)

Sounds like what I used to get too.

You could also check these....

Front wheel balance
Wheel bearing condition
Headrace bearing condition and correctly torqued
Clip-on's/bars fully tightened
Bar-end weights too, as these dampen out a lot of vibes. I had changed mine for lighter versions and the change was noticeable so swapped back asap.

If all these are ok, maybe try better comfy grips.

Depends on where you're getting the pins and needles (paraesthesiae is the technical name). If it's present throughout your entire hand then it's probably an excessively tight grip on the bars or excessive vibration from one of the things other people have suggested above. If you're getting it only in specific fingers and/or specific parts of your fingers and hand then it could well be an underlying nerve compression/entrapment and seeing your GP for a referral onto the orthopaedic surgeons will be more helpful (or post a more specific description of where the paraesthesiae are in here).

this may sound stupid but do you constantly cover your brake and clutch while riding or wrap your hand around the grip, if it the first try tipping your controls forward/down a few mils ,you'll be shocked by the differance
