'99 SV650 N(aked)
i currently have renthal type bars which are fairly flat but i was wondering would i be able to have clip on bars instead. im worried about the bars connecting with the tank or not being able to use them because of space issues. anyone done this before? |

As I understand it there is nothing to stop you putting the clip ons from a faired (pre 02) Sv onto a naked one.
Im pretty sure you've no worries with compatabilty of parts either. Im sure when changing from clip ons to a comfort kit you need the extended throttle cables etc but with the switch done as you propose then in anything you'll want shorter cables. Clip ons wont be fouled by the tank, as its all stock swap between naked and faired. |

Ignore that, it was a faired bike to start with. Sorry

Yeah, my job was a bit different.
It should be do-able pretty easily I'd have thought (unless you're adding fairings too?). I haven't done this swap so take the following as suggestions of things to check out rather than gospel; 1. Top Yoke - get the faired yoke plus a pair of clip-ons. Naked yokes are rarer so you should be quids in with this swap. 2. Bottom Yoke - I'm sure the naked has a tighter turning circle so stops will be different. This might bring the clipons into contact with the tank. Put your bars on full lock and see if you can judge it. If it's too close you'll need the bottom yoke off a faired bike. 3. Do the clocks on the naked bike fix to the top yoke? If so, you'll need to make up some kind of bracket as they won't fit to the faired yoke in the same way. 4. Headlight brackets. The clipons might interfere with the standard brackets so you might need to get some aftermarket jobs that clamp onto the fork legs. Pretty easy fix anyway. 5. Cables will be too long, but should still all work OK with a bit of re-routing. Change for faired cables if the look bothers you. 6. Brake reservoir. The flat naked version will be at the wrong angle on clipons. Again, it might be fine - so long as it's always feeding fluid to the m/c. ALTERNATIVELY. Go old school budget cafe-racer style. Take off your bars and risers and put a sticker over the holes in the top yoke. ![]() Then get a set of aftermarket clip-ons. Angle them so they clear the tank, put a bit of tape on the fork tubes to stop the clipons slipping round and Bob's your father's brother. EDIT: Just for the record. If it was me, I'd go for the first option. Last edited by TamSV; 23-06-11 at 03:55 PM. |

Another thing occurred to me.
Check it is actually the N model you've got. Loads of S models have been nakedised with various different levels of bodginess. Make sure you know what you're starting with before you get started. ![]() |

Lol. No. It was my bodgy solution but not that bodgy.
![]() The naked yoke doesn't have position bolts for the stock clipons so personally I'd put tape round the top of the fork tubes (where you clamp the clipons) for a bit of extra security. If I was doing it like that I'd also get aftermarket clipons that have 2 pinch bolts, just so they're a bit more secure. |

Scylla
If you can get a pic uploaded, we'll be able explain what were on about a lot easier. Another way to do it is to buy a pair of S yokes and stem (before I'm flamed yes its more work), swap the set over and put a pair of aftermarket clip on's on (if the budget is there). Like other people have said, if the bike has a genuine naked yoke, you'll be quids in.

41mm Forks. Same as the CBR600, FZR400 & obviously the SV.
All I did with mine was to remove the top triple, lowered the forks through the yokes undo the bolts that hold the handlebar risers on & remove them, then put the clip ons on top......Simples ![]() It would be worthwile changing the throttle cable as it is a tad long, but I only had mine like it for about 2 days while I faffed about doing other things to it. ![]() ![]()
