Yep, from what I remember reading when they were first introduced.

Don't know why they didn't replace the chain.

I think they do have a service life and need replacing just like Ducati cam belts.

Plus they're working in a more hostile envioroment so occasionally they do break & wear

But genelly maintanence free

Alignment checks, wear checks, 40km replacement.
Neighbour has a Buel with a belt, says its really smooth but forever fiddling with it, it gets dirty and contaminated like anything else would.

You can get them with chain and sprok as well, belt replacement every 20,000 if memory serves.

If you're considering one of these bikes look into them a lot first. I met a fella who had nothing but problems with his. He's ended up sueing BMW!

belt doesnt last any longer than a chain, they dont like dirt and crap they do stretch and are not suitable for high hp applications, the belt drive buels used in the twin cylinder raceing had to be converted to chain drive as the belts wouldnt last a race, and to replace the belt and sprockets/toothed pulley will cost many times as much as a chain and sprockets kit
just found a few prices for comparison
these are for a kawasaki en400 belt drive
belt ..........£284
rear pulley £109
front pulley£58 all plus vat
at that price they should last about 150k
