Default Oil consumption rate?

Does any one else's sv drink oil at a stupid rate? I only filled my oil up to the f mark about 2 weeks ago (it was near enough empty!) and I had only topped it up from half full to full a month before that. out of 14 days I've probably ridden my bike 7-10 of them days. Admitadley I ride quite hard but still it seems to be guzzling it! When I check the oil the bike is always cold and level. There are no obvious signs of my bike burning oil no pools or funny smells the only thing I have noticed is when the bike is up to temp and I've ridden it for a little bit the oil looks to be boiling or is that normal? Help!

Theres probably some issue there, my SV has 41k miles on it and it never needs topped up even between 4000mile services....

I have a mate that had a curvy a year or 2 ago with that sort of problem, I think in the end he tracked it down to being a pipe that goes between the top of one of the cylinders into the airbox, which was disconnected and seemingly letting all the oil out into the atmosphere. He reconnected it and didnt have any issues after as far as im aware.

Could also check the condition of the plugs too, if they are burning an excessive amount of oil im sure they will show it.

Yeah fair point I haven't checked them yet. Funnily enough my brother had a curvy with the same problem but ended up compleatly re building the engine.

Some bikes burn more than others. My SV burns enough that a weekly check is the smart thing to do. Unless it's ending up on the floor, finding the cause can be a bit invasive, though a compression check followed by one with a teaspoon of oil in the cylinder can help rule piston rings in or out.

Ok I only brought the bike 2 ish months ago so it's still under warrenty but if it was piston rings is that somthing a warrenty is likley to cover or is that hard to say?

Most manufacturers stick to a guideline made in the 70s or something saying it should burn no more than 1L every 1,000 miles. Check those figures, I could be way out.

Oil boils somewhere around 350 C. If you get there your coolant became steam over 200 degrees ago and bits will be glowing. The oil does however get whipped up by the motion of the gears and motor components so usually you can see bubbles. Think milkshake rather than kettle

Tolerance on the engine is 600ml in 1600km IIRC.
When was the oil last changed? Old oil can be pulled through the bores as its thinner than fresh new oil. Hence oil changes every 3,500 miles and then change + filter every 7000

If you really thrash it (or sit at high speed or rpm for any prolonged time) oil will get hot, but you will smell the coolant system and the brakes (to an extent) before the oil is an issue. Know this from experience and have done it chasing an orger on a GSXR750, and sitting on the A86 at 90mph for about an hour (a stunning piece of tarmac that can be ridden fast)
