hi. i'm new to your forum and a relatively new owner of a 2005 sv650 - had it a little over a month. the warranty is expired on my new baby, and unfortunately as i was driving it away from the stealership where i got it, the oil light came on for a few seconds. it's done that half a dozen times since - always on the interstate at speeds of 80 mph and up. if i slow down a little, the light turns off. the bike seems to run just fine otherwise, and it only has about 2500 miles on it. when it comes to wrenching, i'm about as useful as a poopie-flavored lolly pop, but luckily my man-toy (he loves that) is pretty mechanically inclined. so if anyone has any ideas about things to investigate/troubleshoot on the bike, i'd really appreciate it, and pass it along to him. thanks! -kate

Assuming the oil level is OK and that the filter is not clogged, perhaps the pressure relief valve is not sealing or the spring is weak.
Need more info to make a better diagnosis.

the oil level is okay (right between the lines in the window), and the oil was just changed (about 300 miles ago) with a new suzuki filter of course. what other info should i include to help with a diagnosis?

I agree with Sid.
If the level is fine then either the oil pressure is really low, or the oil pressure switch is faulty. The main dealer should be able to narrow it down. They can connect a proper oil pressure measuring gauge to determine which of the above it is. It's probably the sensor which is easy to replace and reasonably cheap. Also check the electrical connection to the switch. It might be corroded up. John

even though its out of warranty i would still take it back to the dealer first.
first they may fix it under goodwill. (especially if it was doing it straight away) second they may have a good idea what is up. tell them you won`t part with any money till you agree first though. |
