Default Oil difference

What's the difference (apart from cost) between 10-40 semi synthetic for cars and 10-40 semi synthetic for motorcycles?

Using car oil can cause clutch slip as it's got additives in it to reduce the friction which is fine when it's only used in the engine but crap when used in the clutch.
I think that's the main simple reason.

Also, a motorcycle specific oil should have better shear stability to withstand the forces in the integrated gearbox.

What ever make of oil you use remember it's the life blood of your bike,it does more work than almost any other part of the engine, look after it and it will look after you!!!

Best to use an oil that meets the API SG spec. Car spec oils such as SH, SJ etc have anti-friction additives that can cause clutch slip, as mentioned above.

A decent-brand bike oil from Silkolene / Putoline / Rock / Halfords etc isn't any more expensive than car oil, and has the specific additives that bike engines need to properly lube the engine, gearbox, clutch etc.

Many thanks for replies; the JASO spec information has made the differences clear
