Im currently working on my CCNP so this will be a good investment for the future for studying

80quid though, I paid 120quid for my 3550 and 380 for my 2811

Wow building hardware labs - you kids still doing that?

After all, whats wrong with this and having a nice simple network at home?

Im not a kid im almost 26

Many people i know build labs or virtual labs however in my opinion its not that great of an idea, i prefer to run the network "live", if the internet goes of my mrs moans so it makes me fix it sharpish

Oh believe me, I have been there, done that, had the certification, left the full-height 19" rack and some kit in the garage when I moved because I just couldn't be bothered moving it with me.

However if I could go back again and just do it all in a virtual environment, instead of on a bunch of surplus to requirements 2500's and Cat switches, sitting in a rack taking up space, slurping down electricity, then virtual would win EVERY time.

Well surely you want to simplify the network? If all you have to worry about is the ADSL/Cable router you can just tell her to switch it on and off again herself.

Not bad, the noise will start to bug you about 4mins after you plug it in though!

I enjoy messing around with real kit, for the sake of 80quid i will gladly put that in my home network. Call me a nerd if you like

I remember the days when i first started at uni, you would get guys passing a ccna/degree who have never even touched a real device they just used packet tracer or gns

One guy set up a network with the usual nat, acls etc and put a webserver external and was chuffed that he could browse to the webserver via IP, he was a bit upset when i told him DNS wouldn't work so in a real life situation the internet wouldn't work.

I know loads of people at work who do play around with virtual labs all in esxi, checkpoint firewalls etc however i wanted to play with checkpoint firewalls so i just put one in at home, it gives a real idea of impacts. Example I found that checkpoint r75 with application control loaded on absolutely battered the FW when a new policy was pushed which made any connection through the FW run like crap - if I had run that in a non live lab how would I of known?
