Default Harddrive Camcorder

Hi
I have got a camera mount for my bike ready for a track day.
However the little oregeon Scientific camera I have is not really great qualilty so i was thinking about mounting my Sony SR50 Harddrive camcorder on to the mounting.

My only reservation is that if it is bumpy i have heard that hardrive reading camera's can go wrong. I don't really want to knacker the camcorder so has anyone tried this before in the past. Calling on the legendary knowledge of the org
Cheers

Vibrations are bad, m'kay

Nothing kills a HD like vibration (well except maybe a Sledgehammer)

This is why most bike/helmet cam setups use Solid-State memory.

You can get some VERY cheap hi-8 (tape-based) camcorders on ebay - heres one for £25 Buy-it-now, get one of those and keep your nice one in good nick.

I tried using a bullet cam with a HD recording device (AV in) ... and sure enough I suffered corruption or total loss of data! ... I don't know how much vibration resistance your cameras HD has, but I think it is safe to say that solid state is the way to go I am afraid

I thought as much. thats why i did not try it
The Oregeon camera is solid state but not good enough for editing purposes.
Maybe an old Hi8 would be ok.
Cheers for the info

yeah the ATCs are poor quality and you are not sure what you are capturing anyway.

For quality a bullet cam and solid state recorder is the way to go, or perhaps a well mounted solid state video camera with good image stabilization

Hi-8's are dirt cheap, and you can then mount as many as you like. I have one at home, only cost 30 quid. I can transfer the images to a pc too, though my PC is a little old is it a bit of a stuggle for it.

I've had better results with the Oregon Scientific cam lately, I'd given up on it because of unstable images but I decided to have another crack... It seems like most of my problems were vibration (with my first mount) and interference (with the second). I've had some pretty good results with my last attempt on the fork leg. Still not amazing though, but far better than I thought was going to be possible.

Still fancy getting a better cam though.

My mates got an Oregon one, one issue he had was that the batteries would vibrate and lose contact, stopping the recording. To overcome this he wraps them in tape to make them more of a snug fit. See here:
