Default winter service

i am going to service my 99 curvy.
it has done 25,000 miles.

i am going to do the plugs, oil/filter, carb balance.

are there any other bits you recommend i should change at the same time?

i have never balanced the carbs, is there any tooling i will need?

i want to get everything together at once see.

cheers

not changing, just checking....... as i said this will/should have been done on the last service.

i was told, by a garage that its not worth checking them........ so i took my bike else where

haynes manuals about £10 ebay............ or post in wanted section

i am fairly certain there wont have been any checking or changing done to the valves.

if i find a good article, i'm sure i can fit it in with my other servicing.

Anybody on here have any valve checking tips?

thanks

As the valve clearances are overdue, you'll want to be doing them, checking them is fairly easy, you just need a feeler gauge and some patience. Adjusting them is a little more involved and means removing the cam shafts. It's not massivly difficult but if you get it wrong you can trash the engine.

The main site is often ignored, but it has a weath of knowledge on there:

Go to www.sv650.org and look at the FAQ and How to section.

Manuals here:

Yes, don't try it without a manual, a good bit of mechanical knowledge, & a good torque wrench.

Cheers.

thanks for the link, i should have no problem checking the tappets, thats what you meant right?

so the list doesnt seem very long-
Oil/filter
Spark plugs
tappet check
carb balance.

the carb balance is the one that worries me, because as i understand it, it should be the last thing you do. i dont want to have to make further adjustments and then have the balancing out.

cheers

Those things are for the engine. A service will also include checking the brakes, suspension, bearings, controls, cables etc.

Check through the manual linked to above.

Edit: If you've not done much of this before, it will be well worth having somone experianced to help you, or using a garage for the major service and doing the minors yourself till you're used to things. Start slowly, don't rush a job and muck it up. You only save money if you don't have to take the broken bike to a dealer to have them fix it.

yes the balancing comes last, its no trouble though as you can do it when the bike is pretty much back together

you'll need gauges, I've got morgan carbtune and they seem a great bit of kit.
