Default Warning - throttle body rubbers

This is probably littered with technical inaccuracies as well as spelling mistakes, but the point is the same.

I replaced my lovelly curvy SV650 with one of those horrible pointy things. However it's a thou and they don't do curvy thous so my hands were tied.

Brought this a couple of months ago but have not used it a lot. It started and ran very well and pulled like a particualry pully train, however the tick-over would not drop below about 2000 revs regardless of what you did to the adjuster screw and it never seemed to be as respopnsive to a shutting throttle as the 650. I just put this down to the new fangled injection nonsense and got on with it.

Anyway...

I got it serviced last week and the garage said they were amazed it still ran. Apparently both the throttle body rubbers were pinched and so not sealing. Basically not only was it not filtering the air but it was not regulating it either. They said that when they ran it with the tank up vapour was coming out from the throttle bodies (or what ever they're called when you've not got carbs)

They refitted the rubbers correctly and suddenly the tick-over was adjustable and the revs dropped crisply and instantly when the throttle was shut down.

I rode it back in a force 19 gale with horizontal rain so have no idea how it goes now but it certainly sounded much better when the throttle was given a hearty blip in the garage.

So, if your tickover is not responding to the screw and/or it's a bit on the lethargic side when returning to tickover following a blip it may be worth looking at your rubbers.

It's worth noting that from a casual glance they looked fine before but you can't see all the way around them under the airbox.

I'm sure someone more technically respected will be along shortly to tell you what to look for and what to do about it much more clearly than my ramblings.

Cheers

Yep, it's had a full induction make-over with a BMC high-flow filter, no air-box lid and all the non-metal bits from under the tank removed. Was done by a "reputable" race prep outfit in Bristol who "should" know what they're doing. Previous owner may have tinkered with it.

these things are pretty easy to fit though. When the airbox is split in half and the filter out you can mount the lower half of the airbox and actually see the rubbers properly. Theres even enough room to get your fingers in there and guide everything together properly.
