I do it with the bike on its side stand.

More than that ... you are supposed to do it with the bike on its side stand

If it's your first time, rule number one: Don't overtighten it!
If you think it's a bit slack, you will amazed at how much difference a quarter turn on the adjusters can make. Beware, slackening an overtightened chain again isn't as easy without a paddock stand. Check the basic allignment too, before you do anything.

Put it on the sidestand, loosen the big 24size nut on the swing arm. then adjust the 2 12size nuts on the back of the swingarm, remember to do both sides. Clean and lube it at the same time for extra brownie points!!

Yep as above....also remember to have the adjusters on the same marks on both sides.

Er, no. The markers are useless, don't rely on them.

When you're tightening, just remember how many turns you put on, so you can do the same on the other side.

Chain adjustment is meant to be done on the side stand as per the handbook,

undo the Axel nut, loosen the locknuts and then turn the adjusters the same ammount (either 1/4 or 1/2 a turn )each time on both sides. use the markers as a guide not as gospel!
