For the first time ever I went as pillion on the back of a VFR and it was possibly the weirdest, almost bordering on horrible feeling I have had in recent years.
I never realised how it felt on the back for my girlfriend and other passengers, now I have 10x more appreciation of why she doesnt like me going to fast or not being completely smooth. Everyone who hasnt done it should try, the feeling of not being in complete control is horrible. Its made me completely rethink my riding for when I take people on the back. Pete/Lissa must be completely 'at one' with each other and the bike which makes me all the more impressed with how they ride together ![]() (The VFR even had a top box/back support so it wasnt even as bad as it could have been) Everyone should have ago....

I quite like it, as long as I trust the rider! But some bikes it's an awkward seating position, e.g. on my mate's Hornet the grab rail (I prefer the grab rail, like to be connected to the bike not the rider) is not wide enough for 2 hands - gah. I deffo don't like holding on to the rider directly (makes you lean forward) but a pillion pal might be OK (that's what the missus uses to hold on to me).

Years ago (maybe 10?) I used to love pillion on the back of my step-bro's bike (old bandit) - he was / is a very good rider, very natural and fast and I had complete confidence in him. I was quite comfortable doing Titanic-style no holding on at 130+ !
![]() I hate pillion now that I've passed my test as I want to be the one in control, I don't even like being passenger in a car with someone who I don't know driving! (Unless it's a professional, ie, coach driver). I think you have to have complete faith in the person up front, so I wouldn't mind going on my step-bro's again, but I'd be cautious about travelling with a stranger. |

It's all about trust! If you trust the rider completely, its ok, but yeah I feel out of control and that is scary. Same being in the passenger seat of a car actually!

The last time I had to go pillion was on an old 750 teapot and my mate was going nuts cos I could not stop "helping" him pick his line round corners via bodyweight but also using the sides of his jacket as handlebars
