Default Ever worry about having too little oil in your engine? No, I check it every now and again.

Now not saying that this is a good thing.

Not saying that it wouldnt reduce the overal-lifespan of the engine, but this is interesting....

How old is that article? I recall PB or Bike or someone doing a test like that several years ago.

I do believe that IS the article. And it has to be a minimum of 10 years old.

I'd guess more like 5. The bike's a '97 ZX6R F model registered in '98, which had done 20,000 miles and depriciated to the point that it was considered sacrificial for this article.

Very impressive, but as stated in the article, not representative of the engine being used under road conditions, not least because the fact the engine was bolt upright kept the oil feed from running dry in the 2nd test.

I would be intrested in stripping the engine down and seeing what the head and bores looked like given the temperatures involved. Still, kudos on the fact it carried on, I'd have put ?5 down against it surviving. I have a feeling had they stopped short of bouncing the bike off the rev-limiter, and carried on using 8,000rpm, thus not having a problem with unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust causing an abort, that it would not have survived the 2nd test.

Hmm, who do we know who has a '98 zx6r, with significantly higher mileage than this and the mechanical know-how to probably fix any problems recreating this experiment would cause...

Haven't you just transposed the test to a ZX-9 tho, with the same gentleman with the same mechanical know-how on hand to fix any problems this recreation causes?

So, has anyone tried this at home yet? I don't think I'll try it.

I too would have liked to see some info on how the inside of the engine looked after that treatment; even if they just took out the spark-plugs and showed them compared to a normal-used 20,000 mile kwak engine and then against new spark plugs.

Reassuring article though. I think I'll make a little trip to the rev-limiter next time I'm in second gear and in a tunnel
