Default RiDE survey - chain/lock security

Just got this month's RiDE with the eagerly awaited locks & chains test.

Two things -

1. Why are Almax chains not mentioned? They are previous winners by a long way.

2. Why did the top two chain/lock combos only score 9/30. That's a tad on the low side to me!

Cheers.

Bit stupid of any chain test to not include the Almax, unless they are implying they are so far above the rest that it's a case of "and here's the best of the rest...!"...

In answer to your question.

We were not invited to participate in the RiDE test! When I found out there was a test being done, I telephoned RiDE.

They said that the test was completed and we couldn't take part. When I asked why they had not contacted us, I was told that they did not have our email address and that they had faxed us. I ran a fax log and lo and behold no fax from RiDE. Oh, and they got our fax number off of our website, where you can contact us via email or phone

It's the first time I have know RiDE not recommend or give a best buy to any product in their testing!

It's strange that they also didn't use bolt cropping as their first form of attack. We deduced that they used a sledge attack (due to the times) 80% of bikes are stolen from the home address. You would have to be a complete fool to wield a sledge hammer in someone's garage, taking into account the noise. Also bolt cropping is considerably quicker and quiet in comparision. Given that most chains can be cropped in less than 30 seconds!!!

Hello almax

I have an almax chain, and I can't say I would trust anything else to hold my bike down onto the ground. Certainly not an oxford product, if my experiances with their other products are anything to go by (mostly good but with some major flaw)

Hi Maxine - I am not sure if it was yourself I spoke to on the phone a few months back, I ordered a couple of series 3s - I was the guy that had the bike stolen which was chained by an Almax to a 50kg+ concrete block - so they just took the block too!
If so, the new chains are working nicely just the right size to fit through the swingarm (through an actual hole in the swingarm, not the area in front of the rear wheel - so removing the rear wheel is pointless) and through the gap between the headers and the engine - perfect sizing

Anyway sorry for the derail it sounds like they didn't want an 'obvious' winner?!

Edit: in fact there's the missing bike in my avatar! <----

I've got two series IV 'anchors'. They're ace! Brilliant service too, they couldn't have been more help (I was on the phone for 30 mins!).

Yes, it's me. We had a bike stolen the other day which was attached to a sign post, they pulled the sign post out of the ground along with 2 slabs of concrete. The bike was found a couple of days later, with the chain still on it!! Glad the new chains are working out.

I too have a couple of Almax chains, just the size of them is a deterrent.
We should barrage DiRE with emails telling them what a complete sham their test was and suggest an apology in the next issue
