Might sound like a stupid question but the bracket that holds the rear brake pedal assembly on my Daytona cracked on the way in to work last, and was only being held in place by two of the three bolts, one of the guys who I work with reckons he never uses his rear brake..ever and I should just carry on without it, anyway, Ive always used the back brake for feathering me speed a bit and was just wondering what the rest of you thought about rear brake use .

I dont use it as much as I used to on the SV now, like for any speed stopping I use just the front. I do use the back at slow speed when menouvering or slowing from say 10mph. You can get away with not using it... but id still advise getting it sorted!

Use it loads more on VFR than I ever did on the SV. I find it settles and slows the bike nicely if the engine braking is not sufficient.

He is not alone in never using the rear brake, so I don't find his statement surprising. I however frequently use the rear brake.

Use it all the time. In fact I swap my back break pads 2x as often as the front ones. It settles the bike more and I feel more in control when using both. Get it sorted ASAP. It make make the difference between hitting the back of the truck or stopping just before the impact!

My bikes have always come with a free rear brake. It seems like such a shame not to use it, so I do.
If you were to have to pick one brake it'd be the front, you can stop much faster with that. But having both working is not only sensible but a legal requirement, so I'd get it fixed ![]() Jambo

Ok, it wasnt me that was advocating not using the rear brake, I use it all the time, at slow speeds, around town, as a back up to front brakes etc, my logic is, if its fitted Im using it, in fact trying to get the parts ordered right now and tbh the rear brake is pretty good on my bike so it gets used, just thought Id see what others thought, btw the bike 'expert' at work hasnt brought his bike in in the last 12 months, nuff said

I use it a lot of the time- front brake on a second before rear- really good at slowing the bike down in a short space of time.
I drag the rear brake when pulling away at an angle (most of the time!) and of course in traffic. It's quite handy if slowing on a bend to drag the rear gently(IN THE DRY!!!), as it doesn't upset balance as much as the front. |

I use the rear brake alot, when moving slowly/tight turn.
I also use it alot when carrying pillion as it gives them a slightly smoother ride when braking etc.

I use mine all the time! As i've only just passed my instructor said the front brake was just for scrubbing off speed whereas the rear was for control and finally coming to a stop.
