Renthal Bars - Some Questions - SV650.org

I'm considering fitting some renthal streetfighters and just have a few questions for anyone who has fitted these already.
1. Do I need new cables or will the existing ones fit?
2. Are the bars pre-drilled to accommodate the switch gear?
3. What effects has it hmade to the handling? (good/bad)
They're going on to a naked curvy 1999 Y model.

Depending on how high/wide they are it's yes to new cables and brake line.I have low wide bars and just got away with no new cables but I had to re route some of them and the grips and switchgear are set about an inch in from the ends of the bars.
Mine had no holes in them and handling wise I like it for town work as I get better leverage and visibility.Downside is the bike is wider so won't fit through some gaps.

just one recamondation for you when you come around to fit them. Do NOT CUT THEM THE SAME WIDTH AS YOUR OLD BARS BEFORE YOU FIT THE CONTROLS. I done this...and low and behold the controls didnt fit, the sweep on some of the renthals is different to other bars. i had some renthals, and brought a new pair as i bent them in a little mishap (they were different, i brought the braced ones but i thought they would be the same in my defence) and cut them to the same length and none of the controls fitted perfectly. i had to cut the throttle down and squeeze the grips on before i inserted the bar ends. oh and talking of bar ends...only a few will fit, renthal have very thick walls...its best off going for renthal bar ends as i have found that some after market ones which fit them are awfull.

No bar ends on mine.I found no problems without them and I put this down to the renthals having more flex in them than standard thus ironing out vibes.I could be talking crap here of course.

its best to have them. the other day i went for a little blitz and i happened to come accros a boyed up sazo....pi**ed all over it, but when i got back home, i realized my left hand grip was half hanging of, i thought to my self if that came off while going round a left hander the consequences could have been dire!!!! its best having them.

I've got the Renthal Lows (as opposed to the Ultra Lows which most peeps fit) and haven't needed new cables; I have, however, sawn off about an inch and a half off each end. I haven't got bar ends either.

Road Bike Ultra Lows are about the same shape as the standard bars, however the sweep is a little greater - approx 10-15mm - which is why I changed mine, they just feel slightly more relaxed. I measured the various cables and wiring, I reckon that you could have 'bars approximately 1 1/2" higher or wider, but not both, on the standard parts.

The bar ends are not for keeping the grips in place, in fact the Renthal bar ends are the same diameter as the bars thus won't restrain the grip if it's loose, the grip should be glued in place if it's not a perfect fit on the handlebar.

I have the Ultra lows on mine. I have the bars quite some way more forward than the standard bars. They are (obviously) lower, which enabled me to have the bars that much further forward and still keep all the cabling routed the way it's supposed to.

As for the holes and the locating lugs, as has been said, Renthals do not have the holes. I just cut the lugs off. A bit of insulation tape wrapped round the bars before putting the switch gear and grips back on was enough to keep them solidly in place.
