Your normal British Driving License covers all EEC but we normally got our internationals through the local office but with all the changes of recent you may have to apply to Swansea. MAKE SURE THAT THE COVER ALL YOUR GROUPS as they left my bike entitlement off mine first time.

Got mine via the RAC, just put International Driving Permit into your browser, sent away required docs, had my IDP after a few days, cost around £10/15. Lasts a year I think.

When I was working for a US company I found it easier to sit the Indiana drivers test and get a licence that way. I used to spend two weeks in every five working over there and had a permanent address to use. I never took my bike test over there though, just car.

In Australia, I walked into the RTA (Oz equiv of the DVLA) showed them my UK licence and prove of address and they handed me an Australian licence with all my categories transferred there and then! The also failed to keep my UK licence or inform the DVLA of anything, so now I have 2 clean licences

I only have two now, my US one expired ages ago. My current ones are UK and Maltese full car and bike. I have a feeling my Maltese one may need renewing, which means I'll have two EU licences. My Maltese one also has class 1 HGV entitlement, which is something my UK one doesn't.

I keep the Maltese one as a fall back just in case I lose my UK one for any reason and want to drive abroad.

Less than £10 at the post office - not all post offices do the intermational driving permit so check online first.

You'll need a passport sized photo & your UK driving licence.

They only last for a year. I got 2 for my trip but no-one at the borders wanted to look at them - to be honest I never offered to show them & they never asked to see. Not even the ruskies - they were too busy jumping up & down on my bike trying to break the suspension!
