Default Renting Bikes in USA

Has anyone got experience of renting bikes on the west coast. GF and me are looking at a small road trip on the west coast next year.

Any other info/advice would be welcome - looking to go around the san francisco and los angeles areas

cheers

Only east coast, so can't recommend any particular dealerships. My main advice would be to plan a circular route and drop it off where you hired it from. Initally, I thought dropping hires bikes off at another location would be significantly cheaper than a car, given the fact you can load lots of bikes into a van/truck and drive them all back 'home' that way, but if anything, it seemed more expensive than doing it with a car. Presumably because they ride them back instead and comparatively few people can ride bikes (or hire them for the same journey in reverse).

Sorry for the slight hijack, but do you need anything apart from your UK licence to ride in the USA? We're thinking of hiring bikes for a couple of days when we're in Florida in a few months.

Not sure if you need to now, but may take an international licence with you (its been a while since I have been to the Us now) your lid and any protective you want to take with you. Leathers boots and waterproofs maybe?

When I was in Tampa last you didn't have to waer lid, as wasn't law can u belive that?

Eagle rider - www.eaglerider.com. Best there is. Places all over USA.

You need to show passport and current UK licence. Everything else, they can fix.

Not bothering with an Intenational Driving Permit for the USA as it is not a legal requirement, only recommended (some insurance companies would like to see it in the event of an accident, according to internet gen.) Better the cash in your pocket than another "tax" for the powers that be.

For the price of a few days Harley (whats the point in hiring something less?) for a few days, we got a Mustang convertible for 15 days for me to partake in my Bullitt fantasies.

Hope you are not on the road at the same time.

SF is the biking capital of the west coast. Spoilt for choice.

Thanks for the info. I've driven over there a few times but never ridden.

Me and my girlfriend done a 1600 mile mini tour last year over California, Nevada and Arizona. It was bloody marvellous.
