Default just went to see a bike need advice!

well went to look at an sv650 today looks nice however few things to ask!

1 - there was a small amount of the old mayonnaise around the oil cap, i know this could mean coolant in the oil in a car but is this the same in a bike? however it has been sitting in a cold room for the last 3 weeks and started for short lengths of time and not moved so could this just be condensation build up from the short cold runs?? how can i check if its really bad?

2 - whats the best way to see if the brakes are in good condition as from what i could see its imposible to tell how much of the pads are left?

cheers

1: Look in the coolant. Short runs especially starting it up and not running it (like a total clueless cabbage...) will wet the oil. I doubt there is a problem though, they're not really prone to head gasket issues.

2: Yes you can, look harder Pads are pretty cheap anyway.

exactly what i wanted to hear!!! where abouts do you check the coolant? it has a belly pan on it which makes it hard to check oil level so i hope coolant isnt down there too!

cheers

oi, less of the gay ok!!!!!

if its been sat in a cold place for a while, sat about and only run on short journeys, IT JUST needs an oil change and a bloody good run. Suzy was sat like that for 6 months when Im Indoors handed her over all those years ago, she had the mayo on the oil cap. Got an oil change gave her a good run and all was fine.... some people always think on the really bad side!

Re the brakes you should perhaps be more concerned about the condition of the discs. Especially the rear.

How many miles has it done?

Be mindful of the fact that the Sv is favoured by novices so an 8 year old Sv could have had a chequered and hard life.

provided the engine is sound and theres no damage, most other "wear" items can be sorted relatively cheaply and easily. They are a good bargaining tool too Things like head races are something i would check. They can be expensive to sort at a dealer * as i presume from your lack of experience you wouldnt want to give this a go if it needed them. Takes 10 seconds to check and you can check the wheels bearings whilst your at it.

Other quick one is just to check tyres, they are one of the larger expenses.
