Default URGENT Insurance Question

All,

As some may know, we got rid of Lily's bike, as a result, we have decided to see about adding Lily to my policy so she can ride in the summer or do part of the AR etc.

Having spoken to Express who in turn has spoken to the underwriter. The underwriters are saying that as they know I am on a full licence and Lily is on a restricted, they are not willing to allow us to use the bike and simply swap the ECU over as and when.

So I then said, fine I will restrict it all the time. The underwriter has then said they wouldn't allow us to restrict via ECU as they know we could easily swap, but said and I quote!!! "You must restrict using full dealer installed FI International kit with certificate which must be carried out prior to us accepting any policy changes".

Can anyone think of anyway around this? I do not want to pay for a rubbish restriction when we already have the standard 33bhp ECU in our garage.

Financially, to add Lily will cost an additional £36.30 on the insurance (as I am also dropping from fully comp to TPFT aswell as wanting to add Lily). The cost to restrict is what??? £150 plus?

However, stick as is with changes to TPFT etc then I get back £76.13......

This is really annoying as I want Lily to get practice over the summer using my bike ready for buying her a bike next year.

I'm not even sure if it's legal to have the same bike insured twice by different policies as what happens if it gets stolen? Which comany would be liable? Tricky.

Thats a tough one mate. You may end up having to go down the garrage route. Could you take it to someone you know who could sort you out a certificate without the full cost (as you already have the ECU!!!)

Whichever one you choose to claim from. It's perfectly legal to double-insure something, you just can't claim from both policies. Or you can claim a portion from each.

pay for the F1 restriction & Cert... Rip out the restrictors and use the ECU restriction.. In the event of a clain it wouldn't be a problem as the bike is retricted and Lily will be riding in accordance with her certificate. I cannot see how they can insist on the F1 kit....

or sack them and add her on a new policy

can be difficult as it can be a conflicti0on of interests or it looks like potential fraud. Plu sits quite usual you have to be the registered keeper to insure it.

Don't think you can insure one vehicle with two policies, even if they are in different names. I may be mistaken however.

I can see the insurers point of view; irrespective of what you will actually do, what would be the first thing you would think if someone told you that they intended swapping the ECU everytime you swapped rider. Doesn't make it any less infuriating though.

Without knowing your personal circumstances, or why you sold Lily's bike so quickly after her gettting it, would an alternative not be to get her another bike now, just a hack to run around on that is only worth a few hundered quid? Would mean she could get experience, build her own no claims and would save the risk of her dropping your bike when only covered TPFT.

If not, I'd be inclined to go back to Express and ask them why they won't accept your restricted ECU when the law will. If they still decline I'd cancel the policy and go elsewhere if you can find something that meets your needs, as Fizz suggested. Yes, you may lose out by cancelling the policy, but how much are all these amendments going to cost anyway?
