Are you test riding it before you buy it?
I cant understand why they would need to see your licence unless it was a test ride.

thought they would only need to see the counterpart of your driving licence if it was just to confirm address for finance etc?

we picked the missus' car up 3 weeks ago and they asked for it. We said we weren't sure where it was so they said they'd accept the photocard & passport with a bank statement and a utility bill showing her name and our address. (The referred to a list of acceptable proof's as stipulated by ford credit).

If the finance has already been approved and they've copied all your proofs of address/I.D. then they shouldn't need to see it again. If you really can't find it, give the dealer a ring and explain that it's missing, what else will they accept... They should be understanding and accept other bits.
