Default Chain Change - Remove Swingarm?

For a chain change only on a curvy SY, does the swingarm need to come off? Can I move the rear wheel as far forward as possible and then hook off old chain. Or remove front sprocket to aid the process? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Hello welcome to the forum no you dont need to remove the wingarm. If you have a chain with a split link then just move the wheel forward and split the old chain, hook one end of the new chain on to the old and pull it through, then join both end of the new chain up with the split link. If you have a one peice rivited chain then it is most likely you will have to take your front sproket off hook the new chain onto it then put the sprocket back on, hook it over the rear sproket and tighten up hope this helps, Dom

All posts in idle banter removed and something else after that

Haynes manual does it the 'proper' war i think but you can get around some things with experience or help (from the org)

If it is an endless chain (Suzuki OEM usually) then you do need to remove the swing arm.

If it is a split chain then as above, no need to remove.

or to save removing the swingarm, grind away
Or big bolt croppers might manage it?
Just remember to loosen the front sprocket before removing the chain.

whilst the mentioned method will work, it's wise to at least inspect the sprockets (if not change them) at the same time, the front will show wear about 4 times faster than the rear.

some chains do indeed come endless and require the swingarm removing, also a good time to check the swingarm pivot as well (often neglected) as Suzuki aren't known for their generosity in that department.

Also be aware split links come in two flavours, "Spring links" a plate and sort of "U" shaped clip ( make sure you fit the right way round/open end away from direction of travel) and rivet over link (or soft rivet), the spring link will do, but it's wise to get a rivet one put in as soon as possible.

Cheers Mark.

i thought on the endless cahins that you un hook it off the rear sprocket and then remove the front sproket cover and undo the front sprocket and slide it off with the chain still hooked on it, Dom
