Hey guys.. noob reporting in. *shy*
I'm picking up a curvy SV that I found on these very forums on Sunday *happy ![]() ![]() Anyway, I'm familiar with the choke but do I need to use it? I've read some people never bother using it..and others use it every day.. do I just need it on when starting the bike first thing in the morning when it's dead cold or should I use it when starting all the time? Sorry for my nooby question. ![]() |

A few easy steps:
Key to the start place, check kill switch is to run, bike is in neutral. I mostly start with a little bit of choke, but if its warm i won't bother. Then engage the clutch, and press the starter button on the right handle bar. Very small amount of revs will do the trick, too many and it won't start, too few and it may stall. Then off the revs, and let go of the clutch. Now just play with the choke, try to keep the revs around 1k, slowly applying less choke as the bike warms up. No doubt someone else will add more! |

keep it around 1k, the bikes ment to idle at 1.25k i normally let it sit around 2 k for say a minute then take choke off fully and leave to tick over and warm up.
if the bikes not warm it will be very jerky when you go to ride and the throttle response well there wont be much. give it a rev and if it doesnt rev when you turn the throttle it isnt warm, your get what i mean when you try it. If you rev it and the revs pick up with the throttle movement then the bike should be warmed up ![]() hope it helps chompy Last edited by chompy; 08-04-09 at 12:28 AM. |

I just stick the choke on, start it up, leave it for 15 seconds then get rid of the choke and make sure it revs ok, all done. Dealer told me to use the choke for 30 seconds in cold weather so i just compensate for when it gets warmer. It hasn't started with no choke this year yet. I'm probably doing it wrong though.

Here's what i do
Ignition on, wait for the fuel light to go out. Choke to full, clutch in and thumb the starter. let the engine catch, let the bike idle at ~3000 rpm for 20 seconds, then slowly turn the choke down so the engine idles at 2000 rpm. helmet and gloves on, sit on the bike, take the choke fully off and check the engine is idling ok (my bike idles at 1100 rpm until its warmed up properly, when it idles at ~1500 rpm). Jobs a good 'un. I use the choke whenever i cold-start, even if its just a hint to get a fast idle. Once the engine is warm, you dont need to use the choke to start. I read something a while back about fuel condensing on the cylinder walls when the inge is cold....so when the engine is hot, the fuel wont condense, it'll saty as a nice vapour and fire up to a good idle right away. BTW good question, i think i asked something similar when i first had my SV. Last edited by Alpinestarhero; 08-04-09 at 01:30 PM. |
