Exclamation Oil in airbox and camchain questions.

Got the bike apart down the work shop atm as it rattles so i was looking into the tensioners

is this one of them? (the front)

i cant see a screw inside but when i took the 12mm bolt of the top this came out, are they oil adjusted ones?

also upon taking the airbox off i found

and it goes down this pipe (sorry bout piccie i think my memory card is up the creek)

and ends up here (behind the shock on lower engine)

what is this gunk i can smell it but cant say exactly what it smells like apart from an engine and where does that pipe lead, should i investigate it further?

Thanks and sorry

Those pipes are the crank case breather hoses.

That gunk looks like emusified oil.

Its normal to find a little oil i.e. a tiny wee drop in your airbox. That sponge filter is designed to catch it.

You've been either doing alot of short journeys or you've got a bigger problem. i.e possible head gasket failure. Have you been loosing coolant recently ?

Cant help on the cam chain tensioner sorry.

Thanks for reply

TBH i dont check the coolant (I know i should) but i havent checked it properly today but on the quick glance i saw of it it hasnt lost any.

Short journeys yea i suppose i do really 3 days a week a bout a 2mile trip to college then 2 mile back home lunch then 2mile back to college then 2 mile to work then 5 mins of riding home, unless its saturday which i go for a 20 - 30 min ride varied speeds then to work but straight back home so again about a 2mile trip

if that makes sense

+1 to Fizz.

The tensioner, no idea.

The white gunk is emulsified oil, caused by a few different issues (seperately).

To rule out major issues, take the radiator cap off. Is there any white gunk in there? If there is, you have serious problems (as fizz said, head gasket). If not it's merely condensation in the engine casing, usually caused by short runs & the engine not getting up to temperature.

Assuming no white gunk in the radiator, just drop the oil, stick some cheap oil in, run it for a couple of hundred miles, then drop that, replace the oil filter & put some decent oil in (HG for £12 or similar). Then clean the air filter & sponge (wash it with water, but allow to dry before you put it back), problem solved.

Not really a cause of the gunk, but that's why you have so much gunk in the airbox.

Those hoses you asked about are designed to throw excess oil up & out of the engine, where the sponge catches most of it & lets it go back down to the engine again later.

Running with too much oil is never a brilliant thing to do though.

IMO, your 2 mile trips have caused the white gunky mayo. I had the same over winter due to my 6 mile (each way) commute.

Get up earlier, take a 10mile trip to college. 2 mile home for lunch, 2 mile back to college. 20-30 mile trip on NSL roads on the way home to chill out.

Works wonders for me when time allows (only I don't go to college any more )
