Unhappy Headlight bulbs melting

Good morning

I purchased, a month or so ago, a 2000 W reg SV650. Spent a fair amount of time looking at them, and decided on one for the first bike.

It was purchased with some aftermarket headlight on it, Dash, and the idea was for me to remove it and get it back to the traditional round headlight and indicators. Going back to the Suzuki dealer resulted in him quoting me £1400 to get it replaced - need to get other quotes !

Meanwhile I have a slight issue with the headlight bulbs and them melting. After a while of riding, they get too hot, maybe too much voltage, and melts the solder on the ends of the bulbs, causing them to make contact with the ground and blowing the bulbs or fuses.

I have tested the voltage when the engine is not running (ignition on) and its around 12v, when the engine is running, it runs at 13.5/14v. Headlight bulbs I have had are 12v 40/40W.

My questions are
  • Is that voltage excessive and could be causing the meltdown ?
  • Do I need, or has one blown, some sort of voltage regulator ?
  • Does anyone know of a good aftermarket source of round headlights (and some indicators) for this SV ?
I have replaced the headlight with another temp Dash one, as £26 sounded more inviting than £1400 !

Any comments gratefully received.

That voltage figure is fine. Have you measured the voltage at 5000 rpm?
