On road bikes, people are familar with an engine having done X number of miles or km's from new and can make a rough judegment as to it's condition, but what about motoX and eunduro bikes that are based on hours?
Does anyone know roughly how many hours would equate to a low or a high mileage motor? I have no idea.............! |

very much depends on which engine you're talking about and what sort of off road really as they are all different and put different demands on the servicing.
Cheers Mark.

My curiousity though as a little more ballpark. For instance, if you saw a road bike with 100,000km on the clock vs 10,000km - That is something I can relate to. Yet I have no reference or benchmark for an engine which has done 50 hours vs 500 hours as I'm new to the world of off-road bikes. |

It also depends on the kind of terrain it's been run on. The sort of soft terrain that you get in the UK (like NZ?) will do a LOT less damage than the hard terrain we have here in Spain. This was something pointed out to me by a guy who imports Bobcats into Spain.
Oil capacity will have a lot of say where engine life is concerned. With early GS/LC4 KTM engines need to have very regular oil changes cos they have a small capacity and that puts a lot of strain on the lubrication system. I don't know the oil capacity of Gas Gas engines and I can't find the info on the Gas Gas page. In any case, 300 hrs is quite a few hours of offroading, especially given the stresses involved. Think of it this way; How long is a practice session? How long is a race? 3 or 4 practice sessions and 2 or 3 races per weekend. Now divide the number of kms by the number of hours you've got on the bike and you've got a fair idea of how much use you've got on the bike. Don't forget that most peeps aren't out there for a whole practice session. Beach races really shag bikes as well. |
