As the title really, do they wear out or should they last forever (within reason) if cared for?

well mine have been on the bike for seven years, I don't think the performance of them has changed at all. Unlike the rubber hoses I just replaced on the other bike. Those bent like elbows whenever you braked. They were replaced with a nice black set of Hel braided hoses.
