Default Lockwiring

Hey - Has anyone got any guides on lockwiring - preferably on the interweb.

I get the basic process, but it would be nice to see some specifics or tips i.e this is a good idea or never do this etc, before i get trigger happy with my drill.

Thanks
Luke

Not quite sure what you are looking for, but from experience...

I only lockwire whats necessary, not everything. Thread lock is more than up to the job to prevent threads coming loose so I only tend to lockwire what the racing regs ask for, e.g

Oil filler cap, sump plug. For an oil filter with no bolt fasten a jubilee clip around it and lockwire the clip to a suitable location.

Ok, assume you have never lockwired something before in you life and you have to lockwire a few things - how do you do it?

Like the sump plug for instance, how do you drill the hole? where does the other end of the wire go?

Important thing to remember is that the wire is in tension in such a way that it would prevent a loose bolt from rotating loose. Bear that in mind when you choose the location on the engine case or similar for the fastening hole.

It can also be a good idea to drill more than one hole in the bolt head as they dont always tighten with the hole in the right place if there's a single one.

Do you have a pair of lockwire pliars? makes the job very easy.
