Default Dunlop Roadsmart mileage

Morning guys.

As some of you may no I rode to Barcelona and back in two days. Non stop each way.

In early April I fitted Roadsmarts after reading reviews on this forum and what people in the office thought of them.

I'm sure somebody on here stated they got aorund 6000 miles on them. But after the Barcelona trip mine have already started to square off (Just over 2000 miles on the tyres).

I'm a bit worried by this as for a sports touring tyre I wouldn't expect this so soon.

The week before I set off me and my Dad were in his mates garage and he showed us that after 2000 miles the OE Dunlops on his Bandit 1250 had squared off.

Is this normal or is it just a Dunlop thing?

Its a normal bike thing

If you ride in a straight line for 2000 miles on any tyre it'll square off. Especially if you're travelling with luggage/pillion that adds drag and weight.

Squaring off is down the the proportion of time you spend in a straight line in comparison to leant over and how much power you use when in a straight line or leant over (put the same power through a tyre that's on its edge and it will wear faster for the same power, due to smaller radius and scrubbing forces.) If you do 2000 miles to Spain and back and 85% of the time you're in a straight line you're not wearing the sides of the tyres even though the centre is wearing so its bound to square off. And unless you're off the centre section when cornering, the centre is still going to wear at lower lean angles.

If you confine hard acceleration to when you are leant over 20-30 degrees and then back off as the bike moves to vertical you'll reduce the squaring effect. You're effectively reprofiling the tyre by wearing the sides at a faster rate than the centre.

Im not that fussed about my rear Dunlop tbh. I liked the PR2 much more after testing. It just feels like its moving too much

Think ill be going PP next front and back.

As Berlin says really. Any tire will square off when its not being kept round by cornering.

To achieve this I'm thinking that a lot of this would be Motorway or those arrow straight French N-Roads? In which case I'm not surprised there is a some squaring because all the wear will be in the centre band of the tyres. The only way to keep a good profile is to ride on twisty roads most of the time, to spread the wear on the tyre - almost impossible on most roads.
