I made it by chilling down Carbon Dioxide and allowing it to condense into a solid white lump. Then dropped it into a beaker of water to create the steam effect. I was working in a laboratory at the time, so had access to this sort of thing.
![]() A Cyclinder of CO2 from BOC and a Dry Ice attachment should have you doing it easily enough. The biggest expense is most likely to be the Cylinder rental. CO2 was about twenty quid a refill and the attachment was just a brass hose that screwed into the regulator and a cloth bag to catch the condensing CO2. ![]() Be careful when handling solid CO2 because you can get a cold burn easily, so wear thick gloves and handle as little as possible. ![]() I also believe that when CO2 dissolves into water it creates Carbonic Acid, so you can have fun with some Universal Indicator too. Mix up a UI solution in some distilled water and it should go green. Drop in the CO2 lump and it will slowly go red (it may be the other way around, it was a long time ago that I did this!) To make it go green again, just add something alkaline. It will then go red again as the CO2 continues to dissolve. Magic... ![]() Other solutions that may be easier, a smoke machine from your local musical instrument shop. ![]() |

Its only £5.50 a bag of 10kg, way cheaper than making it yourself! Cold though, get big gloves.

Get some polystyrene, and make a box to keep it in as well, will easily last a few hours then, depending how much you get, but the more you open it to look/get some the faster it will sublime as it relies on the temperature of the ice to keep it solid.

It's uber-cold so be careful. Don't stick it in the freezer - it's warmer than the dry ice anyway. Put it in sort sort of insulated box, and don't seal the lid - as it "smokes" it's giving off gas so will pressurise anything close. And don't leave it in the house in case it gives off so much you suffocate. Dunno where you get it from domestically.

Probably easier to go to Maplin and buy theatrical smoke in a can. Dead safe and lasts a while. Cheap too.
