Hi
So I was trying to fix a minor issue with a intermittent problem on my left front indicator over the weekend and hence I had the bike electrics on (bike not running). I think I must have drained the battery as it died. I jumped it off my car and ran it on idle for about 10-15 minutes. Went to start it this morning and its dead again. Is it a case that I didnt run the bike long enough (should I go for a ride to properly charge it? I was going to but I needed petrol and didnt want to risk turning it off to fill it up and getting stuck at petrol station). Do I just need to jump it again and take it out for 20+ mins on the motorway and it would be fine or get a new battery? I use my bike everyday and I dont want to get stuck at work if it goes flat over the course of a day. I just installed heated gear (EXO2) could this have accelerated my battery to go flat? The bike is 2007 so I guess the battery is about 3 years old. |

Yeah it won't charge much at idle. I read somewhere that it takes a good 45 mins of proper running to charge it fully.
You could invest in a battery charger - it's one of those things that comes in handy time after time.

A friend has offered his car battery charger (should be ok I presume) so I might stick it on charge tonight and use my brothers bike and see how it goes after that.
I just dont want it to leave me stranded somewhere |

Is your friends car battery charger a trickle charger by any chance? A small trickle of energy to the battery over a long period is better for recovery...but anything is better than nothing I suppose.
When you can, invest in an optimate charger to maintain your battery when the bike isnt being used much ![]() How old is the battery do you know? It could be that it has had its time, and won't hold enough charge ![]() Last edited by Alpinestarhero; 09-02-10 at 10:35 AM. |

One discharge you might well get away with, but until you get it charged up you won't know, good luck ![]()

My charger has a bike/car switch - so there must be some difference. Don't know if it's enough to knacker it. Many batteries start to die at 3 years old anyway. Worst case scenario, you'd have to replace it.
Actually no, worst case scenario, it explodes and throws acid all over your cat. But I think that's highly unlikely.

I leftthe internal light on in my car and went away on holidya for 4 weeks. When I came back it was as dead as a dead thing could be . We jump started the car but the battery still appeared dead after we turned teh car off. I chucked an optimate on it but nothing happened for a day. I left the optimate on it anyway and a week later the battery was recovered!
![]() Anyway all that waffle aside can you borrow a optimate for a couple of days? I bet it would restore it. |

From what I can see the maximum charge rate for the SV650 battery is 1amp I wouldn't use it, the battery could overheat and split or explode, squirting or spraying battery acid in the vicinity ![]() ![]()
