Van insurance is separate to car insurance, does this mean that the NCB from a van doesnt count towards a car?
If i had a years NCB driving a van, would this mean the same as if i had a years NCB for a car? Thanks. |

Would probably depend on the broker you were approaching for car insurance, I know of people who've had car NCB accepted for bike insurance, but only because he phoned up and spoke to a real person...

Car insurance aquires a NCB for car insurance
Bike insurance aquires a NCB for bike insurance Van insurance aquires a NCB for commercial vehicle insurance They are all independant to each others' No claims accumulations. you cant transfer your car ncb to a van. A proper pain as I could do with a van atm but soon need to buy a car before my ncb is lost forever as its only frozen by the insurer for 2 years. (should you choose not to keep a car for a period). or so i have been informed by direct line. |

Unless you're using the vehicle commercially, for a business, you should not insure it as such, or you may find the insurer asks awkward questions in the event of an accident. I may be wrong in my inference, but I'm guessing you're thinking that you insure the van in your mum's name with her NCD, then you drive it but not as 'the main driver'. Be warned, not only is this illegal as it is insurance fraud, and the insurers are pretty switched on to the parent/child insurance policy (unless you genuinely are NOT the main driver - ie the majority of miles put on the vehicle must be by the policyholder - and it is up to YOU to prove this if the insurer queries it, not for them to prove) but you won't get transportable NCD as a named driver, only as the policyholder. Some insurers will issue NCD to named drivers, but to my knowledge it only counts if you subsequently take a policy out with the same insurer - you can't as far as I know transfer named driver NCD to another insurer. Thanks for the information. Yes i was planning to be the main driver, my mum wouldnt even drive it, its only to make it cheaper. But i cant think of a way for them to realise that my mum isnt the main driver. If i was asked to prove it, i would make sure they 'know' my mum drives it to work every day. Everyone does this, because after all, any insurance for a 17 is ridiculously expensive. For example a 1.4 fiesta would be 2k on my own insurance, but 1.7k on my mums. I wasnt aware that the NCB doesnt count if youre only the named driver. But after a year of driving im sure the premium will go down due to my age. |
