Anyone got or worked on one of these. Just been asked how easy a job it is to change disks and pads, could he do it on his own. Not done it before but willing to try.
My reply, pads - no problems, but disks..... If the setup is like a normal car e.g. Wheel off, caliper off, undo the two screws holding the disk onto the hub, tap the disk off, new disk on, two new screws, caliper back on, wheel back on then it's a piece of poo HOWEVER, if the set up is as my Land Rover, e.g. the brake disks are attached to the rear of the wheel hub, which means taking the half shafts out, hub off messing around with wheel bearings then it is a BEHATCH of a job. So mighty org. Can anyone tell me how the disks are attached to the wheel on a Ford Explorer? TAAA

Its a modern car, so would reckon that the setup is the same as all ford vehicles (As you have stated) Even the new Landies have normal discs dont they?

It's not whether they are normal discs or not, it's where they are mounted. E.g. the first example in my original post refers to any car I have done this to where the disc is mounted to the outside of the wheel hub and then the wheel attached over that 1992 Corrola 1999 Fiesta 1995 Rover 400 1999 Honda Accord 1997 Honda Civic However the second example refers to my 1998 Land Rover Discovery and at least up to the Discovery 3 (probably that and the new ones too can't see why they would change but we are talking about Land Rover) and the Defender line up too. Where the disk is mounted to the axle, the hub attached to that and then the wheel to that. Guessing it's just a more robust solution to the same issue because the 4x4 is made to get abused. Just wondering if the Ford Explorer set up is the same as the 'normal cars' as listed above or if it's the same set up as the Land Rover as the Ford Explorer is a big 4x4 also. Ta

Nope, it's a guy at work but he doesn't bring it in to work.
He's going to his mechanic, ThickFit quoted him over £500 for the job. Cheecky thieving toadstools, I hate ThickFit, they messed up my brakes after a free check last year and then quoted me £180 to change the disk and pads... No thanks!!!! He's not interested in buying a Haynes or logging onto a forum and you don't want to set up for a job and realise you don't have the right tools. Cheers anyway guys

I've read that one, but that page was just one abouot changing the PADS. Pads are pretty much the same no matter what, but discs can be soooooo different as I found out doing the Land Rover. It took a FULL day

Try " Ford Explorer rotor removal " , but looking at it there seem to be loads of different setups including some where freewheel needs removing first!
You'd be better off having a look at it before committing yourself!
