If you have on occasion, the misfortune of having to visit, or unlucky for some, live, in the Stockport area, you may undoubtedly know of Portwood roundabout, which strikes fear in the hearts of many local drivers, for some unknown reason. It's signed above the road, at the side of the road and painted on the road, for which lane to be in on entering, for the appropriate exit. If you get the right lane first off (not difficult) and stay between the lines, the markings will help you to your goal exit. Simples.
This afternoon, quite surprisingly, an old gimmer decided to cross two lanes to try to take me out. Fortunately, my reactions were quicker than a cats and avoided collision. I tooted the horn and he then ran a red light and buggered off. This of course will not do, so as the lights change, I set off to catch him up. He's at the next set of lights, so music off, pull alongside and tap on the window. The conversation goes like this - Boot: Hi, do you realise you very nearly knocked me clean off my bike back there? Gimmer: Where? Boot: On the roundabout. Gimmer: No. Boot: I tooted my horn at you then ran a red light. Gimmer: Obviously I wasn't conscious of you or the light. Boot: Well, thank you. Maybe those could be a couple of things for you to reflect upon, if you make it to wherever you're going, eh? I didn't wait for a response, the lights changed and I promptly move in front of his vehicle and carried on with my journey. I'm still annoyed. |

I'm not surprised you're still annoyed, he sounds a right obnoxious so and so. He'll come a cropper when the next biker he "isn't conscious of" ends up catching him up and likely as not knocking his wing mirror off or knocking him out. Swings and roundabouts.....bdumtschhhh...
Well done for keeping your cool and being polite about the whole shebang, can't have been easy! |

I use that roundabout on my way to work every night and it's amazing what you see. The delineation would be confusing to many but the main problem is the traffic lights on each junction / exit and many of the light are clearly visible from the previous junction back around the roundabout and also while waiting g to enter it. I see people react to the wrong lights most nights and have seen many collisions on there. The delineation invites dodgy lane changing. As lights change I can hear Mike Read shouting " run-around now" ( joke for oldies ) in my head as everybody dives for a different lane. It was an ace roundabout in the eighties when it was a free-for-all at silly speeds.

At least he had the courtesy to do his window down and talk to you. Most of the a-holes who do that here in london will ignore you at best and turn the radio up, others will give you the finger and laugh at you, others still will shout "if you dont go away i'll call the police!"
![]() I love commuting in london as you can tell ![]()
