Default Halifax bank and their new £1 a day overdraft charge

I've just heard that Halifax are going to start charging £1 a day for overdrafts (from the 6th of December). I currently have a student account with them with an arranged overdraft of £2500. Does anyone know if student accounts are affected because I'm quite worried??

Shouldn't think so...students get all the perks!

"The new system means that most Halifax customers (those with Cardcash, Easycash and Student current accounts will be unaffected) will now pay a daily fee for using their overdraft, whether it is authorised or not."

Nice one, that's a HUGE relief for me. I was really starting to worry because there's no way I'm going to be able to pay it off for months yet.

Thanks for that mate.

Tiz why I swapped to the ultimate reward account, so I don;t get charged for any overdraft upto 300 quid.

But the cheeky gits charge you to have that in the first place, so whichever account you have they screw money from you.

Halifax will be losing our business fairly soon, because of this charge being introduced.

My wife has had an account with them for over 20years, our joint account has been open for over 15 years. They're not looking after loyal customers, so time to move on.

Anybody recommend any accounts?

I'd prefer a bank with real high street branches, so I can go in and rant at them

Come Wednesday you'll work out whether or not these charges will be trialed more or not... if the OFT gets to look into Bank charges in court, then banks will start trials of charging customers for not abusing their bank accounts n such because they can't make their money through interest and charges on things like unauthorised overdrafts ^.^

****ter ain't it.

Personally i'd go with Nationwide, i dunno much about them other than i haven't been shafted by them yet, and they ain't really in it for the profit so much.

Yep Nationwide is one option. I've got an account there which I regularly go into the red, but not by much. I get charged the interest, but it's only pennies, not a £1 a day!

Other option might be the Co - Op bank, then we get extra dividend payout

I had problems with the Halifax a few years ago.
I went down with flue and was off my feet for a few weeks so wasnt able to work.
I went overdrawn on my account by £4 for which they charged me £35 so then I went £39 over drawn, so they charged me another £35.. you get the idea.

Nearly £1000 later in charges, I moved my business, personal and mortgage accounts as well as all my insurances etc and took them to court to reclaim my money.
The good old OFT had stepped in and did their test case so everything has been put on hold so dont know if I'll get it back yet

I switched everything across to the alliance and leicester with no problems.
The only real gripe I have with them is that cheques can take upto a week to clear if you put them into the machine instead of over the counter (big deal, less people are using cheques anyway).

As for the Halifax, wouldnt spit on them if they were on fire.

I took out the ultimate reward over a year ago.

This change benefits me as I will now get a fiver a month.

So no gripes from where I sit.
