Me, the missus and a bunch of mates and their missus' are planning a little ride round. We plan on setting out from mansfield, where most of us live, and heading north along the east coast, wanting to go through the north yorkie moors again, into Scotland to JOG and then across the northern coast of Scotland and back down the west coast. Not sure of a route to take back through England to home like.
We want to do a good 2000miles, over about 10 days, camping all the way. poor students need to do these things on a budget you see. I want a photo album full of beautiful scenery, awesome roads and great memories. Any roads, routes, camp sites or advice the mighty org has to offer would be gratefully accepted. |

Need to hit Glenshee/Lecht road, Thurso and Tongue too, and do the west coast, Applecross, Kinlochleven, Oban, Glencoe.
Should look at youth hostels, probably the cheapest way to it, or as you said camping. I have done the same roads as Darren posted, was amazing. Last edited by Sally; 21-12-09 at 09:27 PM. Reason: Noticed you said camping. |

First of all, there are more roads, memories and more scenery than 10 days is time for, so don't worry about getting it all in. Just come back.
![]() OK, head towards Darlington, get on the A68 and go to Edinburgh. See the castle. Over the Forth Bridge and on to Blairgowrie. A93 through Braemar and A939 to Nairn, getting a feel for it now, turn right at Inverness and next stop JOG. The A9 up the east coast isn't the greatest but you're not exactly spoiled for choice at this point. Don't matter. After you've taken a picture of the sign at JOG, nip up to Dunnet Head just round the corner, which is the furthest northerly point on the UK mainland - box ticked. Now there really is only one road, along the top and hug the coast on the west as far as Ullapool. Beautiful. Ain't seen nothing yet. Any route you like to Achnasheen and then the A890 (my personal favourite) towards Applecross. Over the Bealach na Ba. That was a dead end but my God was it worth it. You can see Skye by now so down to the Kyle of Lochalsh and over the bridge to Portree. Lap the island in such a way as to take the A863 south out of Dunvegan, thus getting the best biking view in Scotland, the Cuillins. It's finally time for a ferry, so Armadale it is for Mallaig and the newly widened and resurfaced A830 towards Fort William. Now strictly speaking you're heading to Oban but when you pass the sign in North Ballachulish that says 'Tourist Route', take it. The Kinlochleven loop is a secret, don't tell anyone. Now and only now the A82 through Glencoe and the A85 to Oban. Yes, that was the long way round. How you doing for time? Pushed? Take the A85 back to Tyndrum and the A82 and head south to Tarbet, but turn right because you definitely have time for the A814 Wibbly Wobbly Way to Garelochead and the Military road back to the A82. Glasgow beckons now, no castle but the women are better looking. Did you say you weren't pushed for time at Oban? Oh, take the A816 to Lochgilphead then and the A83 down the Mull of Kintyre (they wrote a song about it) to Campbeltown. You could ferry over to Arran or loop the A83 back to Arrochar, see how you feel. What to do from Glasgow? Head towards Ayr and then the A713/712 towards Dumfries? Or head towards Hamilton and pick up the Clyde Valley and veer off onto the A701 for Moffat and the Devil's Beeftub? Or the whole Peebles/Gala/Hawick/Langholm/Haltwhistle - hey, you're back in England! And don't forget to tell us when you're coming so you can pop in for a cuppa. |

Wow. just been following that route along on google maps. Looks like exactly what we are looking for. Thanks for taking the time to write it all out. We are meeting up in a week or so to sort it out, so I look forward to showing the lads what we can do

No worries, I'm at work. Pop in to the Ecosse section, where you'll get 12 different routes.

![]() However, that is, without question, the route for anyone 'doing Scotland' for the first time. We covered most of that this year between the GMII, ROOTSB09 and my own wee mini-tour in the summer and it's all glorious stuff. Last edited by JamesMio; 22-12-09 at 02:01 PM. |
