Default PC advice

My old man is looking into getting himself a new PC. The Laptop he has currently is a few years old.

He's seen this:

http://www.sony.co.uk/product/vd-ln-series/vgc-ln2m

half price at £500..

Can anyone give me any advice in haste as to whether that is a good buy or whether its old spec and therefore priced accordingly?

Ive been out of the loop for what is decent in PC's for a while as I've not been looking so would appreciate some advice. I have little knowledge on the latest processors.

Looks like a decent machine for the money to me.

32-bit Windows is not latest spec now, hence the price perhaps?

What does your dad want the machine for?

Will it run 64bit though? It can be upgraded to Windows 7 for a little extra

He will be putting video on it but mainly surfing net, playing movies/music etc.

Yes, it has a 64-bit CPU.

can you not build one for that price? I built mine about 15 months ago and its running a Quad processor AMD with 4GB ram which if you run 64bit Windows can go up to 8GB

Thats it, he doesnt want a big monstrous tower, he likes the Vaio idea as it is all in one package and theres very little wires etc

to be honest i wouldn't touch it with a barge pole .... PC's are fickle and unless they are built by me then i would never trust them i have had a few PC's with no thermal paste on the CPU, cheep OEM powersuplies are useless and cause most of the OEM PC failures also the cooling in that sort of PC is utterly useless

just my 2 pence :/

if you have the skill then build him one

aint any skill required. Heatshinks come ready pasted, board into case and mount on.

Do you provide a warranty?

I think I'd trust the build quality of a global brand than someone in their bedroom knocking together machines
