Default £250 for a Service. Is This Good?

I was planning on servicing my bike myself but taking it in to my local bike place to get the 15000 mile valve clearance check done. Went to enquire how much this would be and he said £250 for the entire thing, Valve clearance and full service is this a good price for all this. Seems reasonable to me.

Seems a bit pricey to me. Was this a main dealer or an independant?

Save money on doing the oil & filter yourself, and then measure the valve clearances yourself.

Then you only need them to change any shims, if any of the clearances are too big.

What else is there to do? Check brakes, change air filter, change spark plugs, grease a few bits

independant. its only with me being new to all this bike stuff i'm not to keen on doing to much myself yet. seems strange that i'll happily work on a jet aircraft but i'm hesitent when i'm the one riding the thing.

Do it yourself. That's way too much and they'll probably put cheap oil in it, if they bother to change it. When was the coolant last changed? You could remove the rad to ease getting at the front cylinder and do that at the same time.

You could give it a much more comprehensive service yourself for 1/5th of what they're charging.

The valve check is pretty straight forward, it's the meddling if the shims need changing that I'd be more daunted by, but I wouldn't pay someone else to do that anyway.

What if they didn't actually do it, just charged you? How would you know?

"Yeah mate, have to change three shims which we'll have to order in. We'll keep your bike to inconvenience you, charge you for something that we wont actually do, and you'll be happy to pay over the odds, as even though they don't need changing, you think they do, so you're just happy you brought it to us in the first place."

Bit of a bargain really!

In London/surrounding a major service is £350-£450.

I paid £188 for my 15,000 mile service from the local bike shop (non-dealer), incl. parts & labour.

I've been recommened this garage by a lot of lads at work who have had all sorts of work done none of them have had a problem at all. It's only a really small place with 2 mechanics ones the owner. he does a lot of custom work as well. He said if it was just the clearances it'd be around £100 if it needed adjusting

You should come to the south west for servicing!

Our main suzuki dealer does 1/2 price labour £22/hour during winter. I had valve clearances adjusted, coolant change, oil+filter, brake fluid changed, spark plugs, air filter and sorted out a bolt i sheared when changing my hugger. All for £140! Also, the workshop has a glass viewing booth so you can watch the work being done on your bike whilst you wander around the showroom.
