Default Minitwin wanted

I am looking for a bike to race - would prefer a FI with nice suspension (will probably have to change it though as I'm 17 stone!). Budget is fairly open but don't want to buy last years winning bike.................
Cheers, Rob

Hi Rob
I have a FI SV650 with ohlins rear shock, prepped to minitwin rules for sale, competed in Thundersportgb series last year, came 6th in the championship would have done better but rider let the bike down! £3900
PM me for further details if interested.

Cheers
Steve

Hi Steve,

To tell the truth, that's more than I was hoping to pay mate. I suppose I am looking for an earlier bike (circa 2003 ish) for my first go at racing.

I might even consider a road bike and do the prep myself.

Cheers, Rob

hi rob,
You might try an alternative route which we adopted last year: buy a road going SV and get it converted to a racing minitwin. We paid under 2K for a reasonable injected model, sold off parts unwanted such as bodywork etc raising £500 then found sufficient race parts for another grand meaning we had ourselves a reasonable machine all for £2500. It never let us down and made pole position three times in the season finishing overall 6th.

The problem buying another raced machine is the amount of punishment it may have taken in preceding seasons such as crashes and general race mis treatment - imagine revving your beloved at around 11,000rpm for the best part of 300 minutes total over the 10 weekends it may have been out on circuit. It may well have had a careful owner, changed filters and oil etc but there is always that unknown quantity. So buyer beware etc

A friend has just found out to his cost that a 'well prepared' top spec Honda 600 he has just bought for the new season has a dicky engine requiring a grand to sort out. Not happy. Have a look at the ebay bike below. It has low mileage of 3.5K, cosmetic damage and would convert readily to the track for around £1000

Just a thought as I know minitwin bikes are in short supply it seems.
Give us a call if you would like any further help: 07904439270

what a load of tosh!!
racers by their very nature nurture and look after their bikes with the utmost care!! Some strip the engines down regularly and have planned preventative maintenance schedules to ensure the race bike is in tip top condition....I did what you did and brought a ex road bike and converted it...but it cost far more than a grand! just the rear shock cost £490! I don't know what components you got for a grand to get your bike up to race spec!!
I do know however that from reading your previous threads that you have or will have spent far in excess of £2500 on your latest project.
Having done the exercise I would in retrospect buy a well sorted race bike and refresh accordingly.
As for your comment regarding a 'dicky' engine any engine can 'let go'. whether it be a road bike or a race bike....
I feel that your pontification goes too far this time and that you should try and kerb your well meaning but hopelessly inaccurate advice to yourself.

Eyup Steve!

Sorry to here you're selling up. Are you trying something else or has lack of funds reared it's ugly head again?

It's a shame, it was always nice to see you and your bike was always turned out nice and I can't remember you crashing once this year!!

Anyway, good luck and all the best.

Leigh

P.S. If I had the money, I'd buy the bike.

I'll second that, steves bike is very well prepped and always looked after!

I know it hasn't been dropped and is a good clean bike, don't think it's really done that much either. It certainly would be good for at least another season before the engine needs a sniff at....

I built a very high mileage k3 three seasons ago now for josal racing, it was an ex hire bike so had been used, so to speak!!

Three years on she still goes well and has even finished top five at the ulster gp. She has never broke down and the k3's are supposed to be the fragile ones!!

Amd I've built 13 sv's now and never once managed to build one for 2500!!

Just my two pence worth

staylor,
maybe you have a few things to learn then. Not in the business of being rude or telling porkies but if you want to encourage novices to waste or be less careful with their money you wont be the only idiot on here to stipulate there is only one option to get on track. Our road bike was exactly that but had an Ohlins already fitted (assumption one), it had a race can fitted which was then sold off (assumption 2) with other road bits sold off we raised enough to fit race fairings, rearsets and wets on wheels for a grand total of (try and follow the math) 2300 (bike) - 800 (road gear sold off) = 1500. Add race gear bought 1000 (sprockets, wets, rearsets and race pipe) = 2500. The difference being it had not been subject to race treatment (ie crashing and engine stress) although clearly some race bikes are indeed well cared for although in need of refreshing at the end of the season. If you shop around on ebay however there are road sv's available, some with race parts already fitted. Damaged but repairables make a perfect base too.

My only aim here - was to point out that the answer to the problem listed above - not wanting to pay out 3 - 4 K or more for someone elses minitwin could be to part build one himself - he suggested just the same. There are lots of decent second hand parts available to enable this on ebay. No one said you have to buy new parts either(assumption 3). With a bit more technical help and support you could have saved some of your cash maybe...............

Our rebuild is not costing anywhere near 2500 and you would be a fool to think a minitwin needs that much attention! Hopelessly inaccurate advice or not, it got us to 6th in the Bemsee minitwin series so I guess we may have something right in our approach? Oh and I think we missed a lap record at Thruxton by 0.01secs, so shuv that up your pipe. And before you sound off about lap times at Bemsee I note your own are not exactly brilliant. At snetterton this year your best seems to be a lowly 1.23, only 6 seconds behind our own - no wonder you need all those shiney new parts, nothing like having the best looking bike in the paddock even if it doesnt exactly move particularly well and costs all your pocket money. Go look up the word pontificate and try practising it elsewhere.................

Thats a few assumptions you might have kept to yourself then?

Happy New year..................nobhead
