Default Charging circuit high voltage

Afternoon.

Since buying the thing ive noticed the starter motor seems to struggle a little then stop after a few seconds held on, the battery voltage was fine at 12.8, and i had fully trickle charged it.

So I switch it out with a friends new battery and its perfect, for some reason the battery must not be putting out enough current.

Anyway, i decide to test the charging voltage and i'm getting a steady 16.58v at idle building up to 16.8v further up the revs

Seems rather high, ill be doing a little research into it later, but i thought id ask those with more experience here too.

Can it damage the battery, any reasons to why its so high?

Thanks all.

Good afternoon.

That's a touch too high methinks. It sounds like the rectifier regulator has gone up the pictures.

Charging voltage should be around the 14.5-15 volts maximum. Any higher will result in irreversible damage to the battery.

Cheers.

I replaced my original faulty reg/rec with a suzuki OEM item; it seems to be a differant design to the one it replaced. so far, so good. I am touching some Pine saying that.
