Default rear sprocket loose

Hi,

My father has a VN800 and the rear sprocket is a bit loose (if you grab it you can move it back and forth) he's convinced he needs to change the cush rubbers, any ideas if this is correct?

He needs not to ride its thats fore sure.
As to what needs replacing I dont know the VN800, but if it is similar to the SV then I'd be looking at changing everything from the wheel hub, out. Something has either bent or worn and if you cant clearly tell what it is then start replacing it all.

What axis do you mean?

If it rolls backwards and forwards in its normal plane of rotation then yes, cush rubbers. If it moves in and out axially with the wheel then you have a bearing/spacer issue or a loose spindle or sprocket which is rather serious.

rolls backwards and forwards in its normal plane of rotation this is exactly what it does -<--> not in and out if that makes sense.

This is why I love this forum such speedy answers.

Yeah sounds like it could be cush drive then, whip it in bits and see what they look like.

If it is anything like my brothers Mille, then we too thought cush when there was about 5mm radial movement of the sprocket, we should have looked closer.

It was actually the carrier for the cush drive that should be bolted to the wheel. turns out the bolts were loose and the dowel hole to locate the carrier had become elongated.
