My dad needs a new tv. He struggles to see the old 28" CRT we have just now. The max he wants to spend is £500. He'll mainly be watching football and films on it.
I am looking at the Curry's site and they have two 42" LG's for £499. A plasma and a LCD. The plasma seems to be miles ahead in terms of spec. Is there a downside to it? Are there any other ones I should look at? The panasonic's seem to be too expensive for a 42" |

I just got an LG 1080p thing think it was an LH4000 or something.
Very happy with it paid under £400 though so maybe he's after something higher spec. Would recommend an LG (they also come with 2years warranty as standard). Good picture, nice looking thing, good on the ps3 too. Heard bad things about samsung, was also looking at toshiba but I know for a fact they've moved their screen production from sweden (I think) to asia recently and have again heard bad things.

LCD = motion blur but cheep to run
Plasma = leccy eater but the better picture watch some football, fast moving sports and you will see what i mean. ok so the newer LCD's aren't as bad as they were a couple of years ago, and the plasmas have come a long way in reliability. if you do decide get a decent brand like Samsung, sony, pioneer for LCD or Panasonic for plasma. i personally prefer Plasma, but having seen my mates new LED i think both LCD and Plasma are well dated now. but like all new technology it was blooooody expensive. If you can wait until XMAS - get a standby set incase his goes pop from freecycle or local free-ads.
The first gen 3DTVs (which will be normal TVs as well) will be hitting the stores at reasonable prices shortly - They should tumble towards Christmas, and become about your £500 mark around XMAS/January sales 2011. I know that if you wait, you can wait forever, but in this case it may be a set that will last a while. Good luck with whatever you decide - buying TVs is always a minefield of second guessing what is coming next. Last edited by andywilson460; 07-02-10 at 08:40 AM. Reason: being an idiot |

Also I find if you buy the first generation of a new technology you are basically taking part in the final stage of testing for the manufacturer. Darren, does your Dad actually have any HD devices such as Sky HD or a Blu Ray player? If not then don't worry about 1080p and if his eyesight isn't so good he's not likley to notice the difference between 720 and 1080. I have pretty good eyesight and I cant.
