Default Mate's had his bandit tampered with- what's involved?

Hello,

On Saturday night, someone kindly took to damaging the ingnition/steering lock on my mate's Blandit 1200. Needless to say, he's very upset. It was parked in the alley behind his house too- so it seems like someone knew it was there and maybe set to it to pick it up later (it's now stowed away at a neighbour's). Either that, or a slow puncture put them off.

I'm guessing new ignition barrel plus fitting. Any ideas what's involved? Is it a costly job?

He's on hols this week, so I thought I'd start asking...

Good evening dear boy!

The original ignition switch is usually retained by shear bolts. These snap off when the switch is fitted, & cannot be removed with conventional tools.
To replace the switch the top yoke has to be removed, & the shear bolt heads drilled off. This enables the old switch to be removed, & the bolts shanks to be unwound.
A new switch will be between £35 ish for a pattern one, & £100+ for a genuine one methinks.

Cheers.

Oh no, was that the chap you were with at boxhill?

On my SV, the bolts holding the ignition switch unit on were just Torx security bolts. I found that a little odd actualy, I thought they would be as spannerman described up there

Cheers Stewart.

Yeah- he wasn't happy and I was gutted for him. Sort of people I'd like to punch very hard and very often.

That was Steve indeed, Matt.

Maybe your ignition has been swapped out at some point or removed and put back in?

possibly, I'm not sure. In anycase, its not there anymore and had been replaced with some dodgy unit which my dad dosnt trust! but it might be more reliable than the older unit

Think it's an age thing - two of mine had Torx. Never looked at the others.

If you get an ignition lock off EBAY/ Breakers chances are good you can get the top yokes with it (if it's that sort of fit) then nobody needs to drill nothing.

Edit: Unless it's a new shiny bandit in which case I know nothing.

The SV (curvy at least) has the security (pah! stupid statement) bolts fitted that require special (which you can buy just about anywhere) tools to undo as standard.

SV (curvy) and GSXR750K6 have Torx security bolts.

What's the actual damage?

Also I posted a bit of a tutorial on re-keying locks the other day which may be of interest, get a s/h lock and re-key to the existing one.

My mate found out today that they've f**ked the bike- they've used brute force and broken the steering lock tabs on the frame as well as damaged the rear tyre.

He reckons it's from a halfway house a few doors down- hopefully some scrote will be receiving a serious kicking for this one. He'll be keeping the bike indoors after this.
